Synopsis
One of the most important art patrons of his time, James Simon donated nearly one thousand works of art to the National Museums of Berlin. Now for the first time, the complete collection of works bequeathed by Simon is presented in book form. Arranged by museum, these pieces comprise Egyptian artefacts, master paintings, objects from Asia, Europe, and the Byzantine Empire, as well as prints, drawings and rare coins. Contributions from the museums' directors reveal how these works served Simon's efforts to preserve cultural values and tradition as well as reflected his own integrity and humanitarianism.

This book flows well and is elegant in its prose. Some biographies of great collectors can be quite tedious. This one isn't. More! The fantastic photos of the pieces James Simon bought and then offered to the Berlin Museums make it a beautifull object. He was an intellectual but essential a good man. This book is a tribute. A deserved tribute. James Simon transformed Berlin using his wealth. He was the impetus of charitable giving. It wasn't until after Simon vast sums that others started to contribute. He focused on art, which had a very important impact on the capital city. But he also focused on education and funding the poor. The great cultural institutions of Berlin all receveid the support of James Simon. A fantastic book.
